I don't know how good the free ones are, so I can't personnally recommend one, but I did find this one which is free:

http://www.digi-watcher.com/

There are some paid ones which are very good for your cell phone if you have a data plan. They are some that are very cheap (starting at $9 or $10 bucks and up:

http://www.teepeetech.com/home-security-systems/surveillance-camera-apps-iphone-and-other-mobile-phones-60.html

Mobiscope is $9.99 and it looks like it gets pretty good reviews. I've used some of the free webcam software before like Yawcam but it's a little complicated to get started.

If you know anything about how your router works, you would install the webcam software and then some of the software will broadcast your webcam output on a certain port of your computer. You enable port forwarding on your router and then connect to that address over a regular webpage. That may be your cheapest route since most webcams come with software to let them act as a web server. If not, that digi-watcher looks like a possibility and then the other options are there too which are not very expensive like Mobiscope.
References :
It is actually an inherent feature of your home security that it caters that kind of application. Better get a home security which has that feature because if you will invent or do something that could make your home security like this, you might spend a lot for expansion gadgets.
References :
http://www.self-defense-products-depot.com/

According to Steve Jobs, the iphone does not support Java:

http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/9731

However, you can find other apps for the Iphone to view video cameras:

http://www.teepeetech.com/home-security-systems/surveillance-camera-apps-iphone-and-other-mobile-phones-60.html

They vary in price wildly. I would recommend for a consumer option to go with the one of the lower priced packages. Interestingly, the high priced packages don't get very good reviews which is surprising given how much money they cost. Some of the companies support video software for multiple different types of phones, BlackBerry, Iphone and other smart phones. I would recommend going with one of those vendors who support multiple platforms because they would have worked out the bugs with different phones.
References :
I would recommend a weatherproof security camera system with infrared sensors. Wireless security cameras are most convenient as well. If you are on a tight budget, you could try dummy cameras. As long as they are clearly visible, they may scare some bad guys away.
References :
http://homesecuritycameratips.com/

You are not alone. Most traditional systems require some hefty storage for all that camera footage. Today's smart systems use a combination of remote access and motion-activated storage. That means you can view remotely what the camera sees at any time, even from a smart phone - and the camera only records short clips (which can stored off-site) when the cameras sense motion. thee are outdoor cameras for this, but many people use wireless indoor cameras and simply point them out the window. The outdoor cameras are more likely to be out of the range of your home wifi, so usually require hard-wiring to your router.

There are also cameras that integrate with alarm systems, and this is an increasingly popular option - that way you are getting the support and services from a single provider. And the pricing on these systems can be extremely reasonable.

Shop hard, and check out the products, services, and especially the reputations of the companies you consider.
References :
With over 20 years in the alarm industry, I currently work for FrontPoint Security, a leading nationwide wireless alarm services provider. Our company offers cellular monitoring and next generation features the “big boy” traditional companies have not figured out yet. I am offering this advice to increase awareness of what alarm systems can (and should!) do. The more we all know, the better!

From experience, I can tell you: as soon as you stop doing the cocaine and/or speed, the desire to spend your days like Tony Montana, eyeing every repair van suspicously while clutching an assault riffle, will just float right away. If your worried about your family's security, take some martial arts classes together. That way, you will be doing something helpful on a number of different levels.
